2006 Early Archery Season Success

2006 Early Archery Season Success

2006 Vermont Archery Season has started and so far things are looking really good. With an abundance of buck in the woods, archers should harvest some really magnificent bucks. One such buck that was reported is this 214 pound, 8-point monster shot in Greensboro, VT by Butch Hatch. We thought this deer was worthy of recognition even though we had no hand in improving habitat where this deer was taken. This is Butch’s heaviest deer taken in his many years of hunting.

Butch found an old cut-off that had an apple tree locate in it. With permission from the landowner, Butch decided to release the apple tree this spring and add some shooting lanes anticipating were this buck will enter. In the end this deer came into his stand in early evening at only a few yards away, creating an incredible experience and a very happy hunter.

What we do on our time off!

What we do on our time off!

Now that 2006 planting season has come to a close here in the northeast we have some time do things that we enjoy. One thing we enjoy the most is goose hunting. It is usually action packed and allows us to unwind from the busy summer season. Although we don’t always fill our bag limit we sure do enjoy a flock of Canadian geese setting wing and drop into the decoys. Here are a few pictures from previous hunts we have enjoyed.

2005 Hunting Season Results

2005 Vermont Hunting Season

Our 2005 hunting season was one of the most exciting seasons for us. This year we learned how to age a deer by its jaw bone. From this data we have found some exciting things. For example we found that deer who fed on a variety of food plots at 1.5 years of age have a larger bone structure than deer of the same age that feed mainly from forest habitat. Not only did this data help prove to ourselves that we are doing positive things with food plots outside larger antler growth but it helped build neighbor support. Many of these deer were taken from friends around our area that, at first, thought shooting deer near our property would upset us but in fact we were happier to see someone get a deer and then letting us analyze their trophy to see how well our food plot program is working. Although these are not state record deer, they are the stepping stones to producing such trophies.

Steam Mill Wildlife Management Area Food Plots - Addition

Steam Mill Wildlife Management Area Food Plots - Addition

Two more food plots were added to Steam Mill Brook Wildlife Management Area in August. The additional spots combine to create another 1 1/3 acres of forage for the resident wildlife at this WMA. The two sites consisted of the Boarding House and Paro Place.

With the addition of these two sites there is about 7000 pounds of forage for the wildlife that call this WMA home.

Roy Moutain Wildife Management Area Food Plot

Roy Moutain Wildife Management Area Food Plot

Roy Mountain Wildlife Management Area is a 1590-acre parcel of land owned by the State of Vermont and managed by the VT Fish & Wildlife Department. The WMA is located within the towns of Barnet and Ryegate, and ranges from the top of Roy Mountain, west to Jewett Pond, and south to the shores of Upper and Lower Symes Ponds.

Like many other wildlife management area’s in Vermont Roy Mountain WMA has a few old farm fields that dot the property. Here we planted one and a half acres of near the parking location off Roy Mountain Road. This field is located near a deer wintering area and surrounded by white oaks.

Calender Brook Wildlife Management Area Food Plot

Calender Brook Wildlife Management Area Food Plot

Another Wildlife Management Area (WMA) that we were able to plant for the VT Fish & Wildlife Department is located in Sutton, VT. Calendar Brook WMA is a 413 acre mostly old agricultural property. The property holds a great deer yard and has many small apple trees that dot the old farm fields.

The previous year the VT Fish & Wildlife Department held a timber sale that left on of the old fields open to plant. After careful site evaluation we determined that Gulf Annual Rye would be the best product to plant this year. Gulf Annual Rye works great as a site condition improvement product which this area needed. The long term goal is to convert this Gulf Annual Rye site into a perennial such as Clover, Alfa-Rack Plus, or Extreme which will provide a great food source for 3-5 years.

Steam Mill Brook Wildlife Management Area Food Plot

Steam Mill Brook Wildlife Management Area Food Plot

In the wake of the controversial deer meetings last year the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department has been more engaged in habitat improvements on Wildlife Management Areas (WMA’s). One of the WMA’s that we were lucky enough to work on is Steam Mill Brook which lies in Caledonia County in the towns of Walden, Stannard, Wheelock, and Danville. This WMA is 10,421 acres with active logging and now new food plots.
